I didn’t know it was this pretty

How often do we as adults delay experiences, assuming they won’t be worth it. A recent bush walk reminds us of the beauty and joy that come from taking the first step.

I don’t know about you, but sometimes it can feel like an impossible task just getting the kids out of the house for a bush walk. When they were little, they didn’t question it they simply came along for the adventure. These days? Not so much.

Recently, after about 30 minutes of persuasion, I finally convinced my 10-year-old (and the dog!) to jump in the car for a short drive to a walking track we hadn’t visited in years.

About one kilometre in, she smiled and said, “Oh Mum, this is so good.”

Two kilometres in: “How much further to the quarry?”

Three kilometres in, we reached an old, abandoned quarry that has slowly been reclaimed by nature. Crystal-clear water, native plants, birds darting across the surface, it was breathtaking.

She stopped at the waters edge and said, “Oh Mum, I didn’t know it was this pretty.” (The photo above is one she took herself.)

As we walked back, I couldn’t help but think how often we do exactly the same thing as adults.

We put things off because they seem like too much effort. We delay the phone call, skip the walk, postpone catching up with a friend, or avoid trying something new because we assume it won’t be worth it. We wait until we feel motivated before we act.

I’m certainly guilty of that.

That afternoon reminded me of something simple: sometimes we just need to show up and let ourselves be surprised.

The walk wasn’t extraordinary because it was perfectly planned. It became memorable because we took the first step. The beauty wasn’t waiting in our lounge room; it was waiting on the other side of a little resistance.

I wonder if we’ve started expecting amazement to come before action. Perhaps we’ve got it the wrong way around.

Maybe motivation isn’t the starting point at all. Maybe it grows as we move. Maybe wonder is not found before we begin, but because we chose to begin.

So this week, do the thing that sounds quietly good. Take the walk. Visit the place you’ve been meaning to explore. Invite the friend for coffee. Put the phone down and step outside.

You might just discover that some of life’s most beautiful moments aren’t planned they’re found by those willing to take the first step.
